Meet the Doctors

Dr. Sandy Chapnick is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts in Amherst and Life Chiropractic College, graduating Cum Laude in 1986. He began as an associate at Billerica Chiropractic Office immediately upon graduation. He and his wife, Dr. Honi Kawut, purchased Billerica Chiropractic Office on Jan. 1, 1990. Together they built one of the largest and most successful chiropractic offices in the Greater Lowell area. In 1995, Dr. Chapnick went “back to school” to earn an additional degree as a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician and has recently begun caring for an out-of-town professional sports team.

Dr. Chapnick is an avid lecturer having lectured to civic groups, churches, and schools and at Yale Medical School. Along with his wife, they have had a television show on Billerica Access T.V. since 1998 entitled You and Your Health (check the Billerica Minuteman for days and times). Chapnick also writes a regular health article for the Billerica Minuteman entitled "Just for the Health of it".

Being a chiropractor was a goal of his since he was a 14-year-old boy after receiving his first adjustment for an acute case of torticollis (stiff neck). He knew at the time that chiropractic was great for neck and back pain but it was during chiropractic school and throughout his career that he began to understand the remarkable healing ability of the human body when it is free from nerve interference caused by subluxations. To this day, he continues to be amazed on a daily basis the miracles that chiropractic produces. After 24 years in practice there is absolutely nothing else he would rather do than be a chiropractor so that he can help his patients achieve greater levels of health than they have known before.

When not in the office, Dr. Chapnick loves spending time with his wife, his daughter Arielle and his son David. He also exercises regularly, ran his first 1/2 marathon just prior to his 49th birthday, and is an avid bowler. Having been born in the Bronx, N.Y. he still roots for the N.Y. Yankees.

Dr. Honi Kawut received her B.A. degree from the University ofPennsylvania in 1982. Her majorwas a new, revolutionary interdepartmental degree called The Biological Basis of Behavior, which merged the studies of psychology, neurology, biology and anthropology. This was the early beginning of what has become known as the “Mind, Body Connection” and further fueled her interest in how people can become and stay their best. She received her Doctor of Chiropractic degree from New York Chiropractic College in 1985 and began as an associate in a large practice in New Jersey.

During her early years in practice, Dr. Kawut saw why chiropractic was the logical pathway for people to attain maximum health and wellness coupled with sound nutrition, positive mental attitude, and all the aspects of a healthy lifestyle. Through chiropractic, she was able to change many lives from the very young to the elderly.

She met her husband, Dr. Sandy Chapnick, at a chiropractic seminar in 1987 and they were married in 1988. They purchased Billerica Chiropractic Office in 1990 and have developed it into a center of health and wellness in the Greater Lowell area. Dr. Kawut has lectured extensively to civic, school, and PTO groups in addition to professional groups including Yale Medical School.
Currently, Dr. Kawut divides her time between enhancing the health of her patients and nurturing the lives of her children, ages 8 and 12. She enjoys helping her patients attain new levels of health. She has seen chiropractic change the lives of thousands and looks forward to changing thousands more.
Dr. Leta Skalwold studied at SUNY Binghamton for her undergraduate courses and obtained her Doctorate from Palmer Chiropractic College in 2009. She began working at Billerica Chiropractic Office immediately after graduating. Since working at Billerica Chiropractic Office she has already been on Billerica Access T.V. speaking about chiropractic and its application for pregnant women and children. Dr. Leta, as she is called in the office, is currently working on a special 180-hour certification program to become certified in pediatric and pregnancy chiropractic care.

Dr. Leta has wanted to become a chiropractor since she was six years old when her father ruptured a disc and was greatly helped by chiropractic care. Her specific interest in pregnancy and children comes from her interest in natural child birth and midwifery and the belief that life long health begins while you are inside your mothers womb and that any mishaps that may occur between the time when you are born are easier to deal with sooner rather than later on in life.

Dr. Leta, in her free time, loves to do yoga, pilates, climb mountains, go scuba diving, work out, cook, bead, and travel as much as possible.
